Job Title: Occupational Therapist - Hospital Education
Terms of Employment: 11-month (230 Day)

General Description: The Richmond Hospital Education Program (RHEP) is a State Operated Program (SOP) funded to provide educational services to students hospitalized at the Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU. The RHEP provides in-patient educational services, serving students in grades PK-12 including post-graduates. The Occupational Therapist will serve as part of an educational team who supports students in accessing their educational program within the hospital setting. The Occupational Therapist is responsible for providing services and support for patients with a wide variety of learning abilities in an acute care hospital setting at Children's Hospital of Richmond - Northside Brook Road campus. Services may also be provided as needed at the other SOPs in RPS (Virginia Treatment for Children and the Richmond Juvenile Detention Center).
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: - Functions as a member of multi-disciplinary teams to evaluate student function, identifying those requiring school-based therapy services, appropriate programming and on-going progress
- Provides direct and indirect services for fine motor & communication skills across all instructional areas (literacy, writing, math, art, music, adapted PE & pre-vocational skills)
- Select/create/customize/modify/maintain AAC and AT devices (low-tech and high-tech)
Assist with student mobility and positioning needs throughout the day,
- Address sensory impairment needs to assist students with sensory processing, vision and hearing impairments
- Assists teachers with adapting and modifying activities, materials, and the environment to support student learning and participation.
- Evaluates needs of students, designing and implementing appropriate therapies, preparing and maintaining appropriate records
- Chooses activities to improve student performance in the skill areas (i.e. gross motor, fine motor, perceptual, visual motor, sensory system integration, positioning) necessary for accessing curriculum, learning and functioning within the school environment
- Identifies, acquires and supports use of accommodations or equipment necessary to facilitate student access to curriculum
- Reviews and participates in development of IEPs, evaluation, assessment and progress reports
- Maintains specified records with data on each student referred, evaluated and/or identified for on-going occupational therapy services
- Submits records, reports and assignments promptly and efficiently
- Establishes and monitors procedures, and resources to manage school-based occupational therapy services
- Provides other related, direct services through a variety of methods (e.g., classroom presentations, in-services to staff/parents, etc.) as needed
- Adheres to the ethical standards and codes of the profession and to the established rules, regulations, and laws governing special education programs
- Participates in activities that promote professional development and use clinical/educational research to enhance direct services
- Supports and implements district policies, regulations, procedures, and administrative directives
Qualifications: - Bachelor's or Master's degree in occupational therapy, from an accredited university
- Appropriate license as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia Board of Health Professions
- Possession of or ability to obtain a National Provider Identification (NPI) number prior to employment
- Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of school based occupational therapy services
- Excellent organizational, and oral and written communication skills
- Bilingual skills to include Spanish, preferred
- Ability to work independently and to effectively handle multiple school assignments
- Possession of a valid Virginia Driver's License and use of a personal vehicle
