Job Summary: Performs a variety of complex technical procedures associated with orthopedics, including applying, adjusting and removing casts and splints, to assist the Physician/Physician Assistant in the care and treatment of orthopedic patients, according to practice, routing or established procedures. Makes members/patients and their needs a primary focus of ones actions; develops and sustains productive member/patient relationships. Actively seeks information to understand member/patient circumstances, problems, expectations, and needs. Builds rapport and cooperative relationship with members/patients. Considers how actions or plans will affect members; responds quickly to meet member/patient needs and resolves problems. Essential Responsibilities: This position, knows and complies with all Kaiser Permanente quality, safety, and emergency policies and procedures. Demonstrates quality and effectiveness in work habits and clinical practice in every interaction with patients, colleagues, providers, and leadership. Ensures patient safety in the preparation and provisioning of care related to but not limited to medications, procedures, infection prevention, fall prevention, including consistent use of two patient identifiers and procedural time outs. Reports safety hazards, accidents and incidents, and unsafe working conditions promptly. Applies, adjusts and removes casts, walking heels and splints, e.g. long leg casts and splints, cylinder casts and forearm splints, for patients. Reviews Physician/Physician Assistant orders; position affected area of patients body; covers injured area with specified protective material; prepares and wraps casting/splinting material around affected area; trims remodels and bivalves casts and cuts windows in casts. Consults with Physician/Physician Assistant regarding unusual or complex casting or splinting. Assist Physician/Physician Assistant with special orthopedic procedures, e.g., preparation of treatment rooms requiring sterile field, fracture manipulation and pin removal; maintains patient in correct positions and prepares injured area of patient. Removes dressings, cleans wounds/surgical incisions, removes staples and/or sutures, and applies dressing material used to cover a wound or surgical incision with established protocol. Repairs, trims, adjust removes, and reapply casts and/or splints based on written and verbal Physician/Physician Assistant instructions. Measures, fits and adjusts crutches and canes. Teaches basic gait training. Must be credentialed prior to performing orthopedic technician duties at St. Joseph Hospital. Documents all procedure on progress sheet and sent to Physician/Physician Assistant to approve. Assists members who are upset or anxious about their visits to the Orthopedics Department. Act as a contact for Customer Service. Assists supervisor in identifying the most cost effective use of department resources i.e. supplies, braces, splints and staff overtime. Recognized the preferences of each Physician/Physician Assistant is working with and serves as a resource to other staff members in caring for those patients. Attends departmental meetings. Consults with Physician/Physician Assistant regarding unusual or complex casting or splinting. Participates in and develops educational opportunities to update staff. Evaluates personal using set criteria and establishes annual personal and professional goals. Serves as a technical resource to other departmental personnel regarding the availability of casts, splints and braces. Conducts self in a professional manner with respect to Physician/Physician Assistant, supervisors, team leaders and staff members within the department and throughout the facility. Works with team member to accommodate Physician/Physician Assistant schedules. In addition to defined technical requirements, accountable for consistently demonstrating service behaviors and principles defined by the Kaiser Permanente Service Quality Credo, the KP Mission as well as specific departmental/organizational initiatives. Also accountable for consistently demonstrating the knowledge, skills, abilities, and behaviors necessary to provide superior and culturally sensitive service to each other, to our members, and to purchasers, contracted providers and vendors. Basic Qualifications: Experience Minimum two (2) to three (3) years of experience as an orthopedic technician. Per the National Agreement, current KP Coalition employees have this experience requirement waived. Education High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required. License, Certification, Registration Orthopedic Technologist Certificate Additional Requirements: Must have demonstrated ability to perform a variety of technical orthopedic procedures, including applying, adjusting and removing casts and splints, and in the design and construction of custom made braces and splints. Demonstrated customer service skills, customer focus abilities and the ability to understand Kaiser Permanente customer needs. Preferred Qualifications: N/A
