Job Purpose:

The Senior Development Manager is a seasoned fundraiser that is ready to take on the exciting opportunity of building Fairtrade America's development workstreams from the ground up. As Fairtrade enters a new innovative initiative with a strategic partner aimed at increasing resources for smallholder farmers, this Senior Manager will establish sturdy operational foundations for fundraising, lead on all grant proposal writing as well as developing and stewarding mutually beneficial relationships with funders. Reports To: Director of Brand, Impact and Communications

Duties & Responsibilities:

Set sturdy fundraising foundations -- approximately 20% of your time

  • Conduct landscape analysis of fundraising opportunities in the US that will advance Fairtrade's mission with a particular emphasis on increasing market access for smallholder farmers.
  • Establish 3-5 year fundraising strategy that advances the interests of smallholder farmers and leverages the unique position and network of Fairtrade and brand partners globally.
  • Collaborate with Fairtrade International to join and actively maintain a healthy database of Fairtrade America donor and prospect information in global fundraising customer relationship management tool (Salesforce).
  • Set and implement processes to regularly inform Fairtrade leadership and the Advisory Council on viability study, fundraising progress, identifying opportunities for donor stewardship and prospect cultivation support from directors.
  • Guide Advisory Council in crafting a long-term strategy and framework to increase impact among smallholder farming communities.

Fundraising -- approximately 50% of your time

  • Collaborate with producer networks, global fundraising staff and strategic partner(s) to identify funding gaps and opportunities.
  • Research potential donors and establish strong funding relationships.
  • Manage all grant proposals from research to determining fit to project ideation to writing and submission to implementation and reporting.

Prospect cultivation and donor stewardship -- approximately 20% of your time

Serve as primary point of contact for all US donors and prospects.

  • Establish short- and long-term donor strategies to create a strong community of supporters around Fairtrade in the US leveraging leadership team and strategic partner(s) for cultivation and stewardship purposes.
  • Collaborate with Licensing and Impact Coordinator on donor transparency initiatives like Fairtrade's Annual Report, individual donor reporting, etc.
  • Proactively network and build relationships with potential donors on behalf of Fairtrade and this innovative initiative.

Team Leadership and Management -- approximately 10% of your time

  • Serve as a senior team member collaborating closely with Director of Brand, Impact, and Communications on strategy creation, supporting onboarding new team members and increasing cohesion across the organization.
  • Craft talking points and trainings for Fairtrade team as we begin fundraising to bring the team along for this organizational expansion of priorities.
  • Be an active member of the global Fairtrade International Partnerships and Programs Implementation community, seeking out opportunities advance international collaboration and position Fairtrade America as a trustworthy partner among other offices.
  • Contribute to data integrity and reporting on team and organizational key metrics.
  • Track budgets, helping us get the most return on investment.

Location:

This position is based at Fairtrade America's headquarters in Washington, DC with a 2-day/week in-office hybrid model. To be eligible for this position, candidates must reside in or be willing to relocate to either the District of Columbia, Virginia, or Maryland.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree plus a minimum of seven (7) years' relevant experience.
  • Exceptional organizational skills, with a proven ability to manage multiple competing priorities and keep track of many details.
  • Excellent leadership and people management skills, including coaching and employee development, delegation and empowerment, finding consensus and cultivating buy-in, and relationship building.
  • Excellent writing, copy-editing, presentation and communication skills.
  • Flexible, collaborative, creative teammate willing to jump in and contribute to the broader team's success.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Basic familiarity with Microsoft Office and SharePoint, customer relationship management (CRM) software, Adobe Creative Suite, and project management software like Trello.
  • Experience working in the food, beverage and/or agriculture sectors.
  • Background in building donor relationships from the ground up.
  • Strong understanding of and experience working with the international development funding ecosystem from USAID to philanthropy to impact funding.
  • Commitment to Fairtrade and social justice issues.
  • Personal or professional international experience (such as working on global or internationally focused projects or living in countries outside of the US) preferred.
  • Experience managing others.
  • Willingness to travel up to 10% if needed.
