Estimator Job Description

The Estimator position is responsible for using a combination of past experiences and project specifications to

accurately project the number of materials, equipment, and man hours that must be utilized to complete a

given project. Based upon these calculations, they create a project budget that is then presented to Management.

All necessary details must meet not only legal, but also company policies and guidelines. Estimator to provide area-specific forecasts and report progress status of multiple bids, as liaison between estimating team and VP. Revise estimates and implement required changes. Maintain client relations by being lead contact of proposal for client.

 

Job Responsibilities

 

  • Travel to potential sites to evaluate existing conditions and meet with site owners or representatives.
  • Review and analyze specifications and proposals to cost and labor estimates for products, sealed bids, and subcontracts, and cost-efficient alternatives in materials and construction industry
  • Bid on a competitive basis and submit simultaneous quotes to primes.
  • Effectively manage the needs of the organization, the project, and the customer in the best possible manner.
  • Communicate directly and timely with customers and stakeholders, while collaborating with operations staff, subcontractors, and client
  • Properly follow all company policies and OSHA/MSHA regulations for safe working procedures and environment. Report any problems to the Superintendent, Safety Manager, or Human Resources Manager.
  • Leadership and accountability - “Own the Jobsite” mentality
  • Lead department improvement initiatives

 

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree preferred from an accredited four-year college or university; or equivalent years of recent construction and/or bidding experience related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
  • The ability to pass a pre-employment screening and testing

  • Must be willing and able to travel and work away from home when required
  • Must be willing and able to work nights and weekends when necessary.
  • Must be willing and able to report to the assigned job site ready to begin work at the designated start time.
  • Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures and MPM Company policies and procedures
  • Willingness to work in a team environment and assist with other duties as assigned
  • Software knowledge and ability to interpret schematics and engineering and proposal drawings

 

Physical Demands

The following physical demands are representative of those that must be met in Construction/Materials Operations to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to hear and speak effectively to customers or employees of organization.
  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret graphs.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form is required to complete tasks in an efficient and safe manner.
  • Vision abilities required by this job include color, close, and distance vision, as well as peripheral, depth, and focus perception vision.
  • Work can be performed at heights, requiring the employee to climb and balance in ladders, scaffolds and stair towers, often with narrow steps and passageways.
  • This position requires walking, standing, sitting, bending, twisting, sitting, stooping, kneeling, crawling, crouching, and lifting.
  • Regularly required to sit and/or stand during a work shift of at least eight hours per day, on uneven surfaces, including natural ground and slopes in varying weather conditions.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms.
  • Must be able to carry, lift, push, and pull up to 50 lbs without assistance
  • Ability to operate equipment under extreme temperatures and for extended hours.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, based on project needs and demands.

 

Work Environment

The following physical demands are representative of those that must be met in Construction Operations to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Work is performed outdoors, on a job site, in extreme weather conditions and for extended hours. 
  • Work environment periodically exposes the employees to high levels of noise, dirt, grease, and dust that is typically associated with a construction project.
  • Employee regularly works with or near heavy equipment and moving machinery.
  • Work may involve a variety of substances or materials commonly found on construction sites such as form oil, grease, curing compounds, gasoline, diesel fuel, asphalt and concrete.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts, frequently walks on uneven surfaces, including natural ground and slopes, in varying weather conditions, and is regularly exposed to wet, humid condition airborne particles, and extreme heat or cold.
  • The employee is occasionally exposed to vibration.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet but may require protective equipment at some facilities.
